Pune: Eight More RO Water Plants Sealed in Dhayari Amid GBS Outbreak
Pune, 6th February 2025: In the wake of the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Water Supply Department sealed eight more reverse osmosis (RO) water projects on Wednesday. This follows a similar crackdown on Tuesday, bringing the total number of sealed projects to 25.
The PMC had tested water samples from 30 private RO plants in Dhayari, Nandedgaon, and nearby areas. The results revealed bacterial contamination in 19 projects, while 11 had zero chlorine content, making the water unfit for consumption. Officials stated that these projects would only be allowed to resume operations after compliance with new regulations and a clean water certification.
However, some political activists are reportedly pressuring the municipal administration to lift the closures. Several RO operators have also contested the decision, arguing that their water was not contaminated. “Our water did not contain bacteria. Then why was our project sealed?” they questioned. In response, the PMC clarified, “Even though bacteria were absent, the water had zero chlorine content and was hard, making it unsafe for drinking.”
Further investigations have revealed that certain RO operators were selling municipal water as RO-purified water, raising concerns about regulatory oversight. The PMC is now under scrutiny for its next course of action regarding these violations.
