Swargate, 29th January 2026: A 68-year-old cyclist was killed on Tuesday night after being struck by a speeding dumper at Deshbhakt Keshavrao Jedhe Chowk, Swargate, highlighting growing concerns over road safety in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Vishwanath Shankar Salunkhe, a resident of Jaybhavani Nagar, Parvati. According to Swargate Police, Salunkhe was returning home on his bicycle around 9:45 PM when the dumper, carrying construction materials, collided with him near Andabhurji Gadi, causing fatal injuries.
The dumper driver, Dattatreya Yadav More (35), of Chaundi, Jamkhed, Ahilyanagar district, was found to be under the influence of alcohol during a medical examination. A case has been registered against him at Swargate Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
Residents have raised concerns over persistent encroachments around Jedhe Chowk and the Swargate bus depot, which narrow roads and pedestrian pathways, leading to congestion and accidents. They have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation and traffic authorities to take immediate measures to clear obstructions and improve road safety in the area.
