Kharadi, 14th June 2023: A 75-year-old resident of Kharadi fell victim to an online fraud involving a electricity bill scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 3.7 lakh. Although the incident occurred on August 4th of the previous year, the FIR was filed on Saturday after the victim’s complaint application was duly verified.

The police investigation revealed that the elderly man received a phone call from an unidentified number, with the caller posing as an official from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). The fraudster, adopting a guise of authority, pressured the victim into paying his alleged outstanding dues to avoid a power disconnection. To facilitate the transaction, the scammer sent a hyperlink to the victim, urging him to make the payment by clicking the provided link. Trusting the caller, the victim complied, inadvertently granting the fraudster unauthorized access to his personal information. Only upon receiving a bank statement did the victim realize that he had been deceived.

Following the victim’s complaint, the Chandanagar police registered a case against the fraudster under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
