Somwar Peth, 8th January 2026: Ward No. 24 has seen a significant strengthening of its security infrastructure with the installation of an extensive CCTV surveillance network, an initiative attributed to the planning and foresight of BJP’s official candidate Ganesh Bidkar. A total of 170 CCTV cameras have been installed in the Somwar Peth area under the jurisdiction of Samarth Police Station, using funds provided by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The CCTV network has been set up after identifying key locations across the ward, including 24 major junctions, around 60 sensitive spots, and high-footfall areas such as schools, hospitals, ATMs and bus stops. The coverage spans the central stretch from Kasba Ganpati to Kamala Nehru Hospital and KEM Hospital, ensuring continuous monitoring in some of the busiest parts of the ward.

According to officials, nearly 80 percent of the Samarth Police Station’s jurisdiction is now under CCTV surveillance. This has helped police maintain closer watch over crowded areas and has eased the operational burden on law enforcement agencies, particularly during peak hours and major public events.

The Peth areas in Ward No. 24 witness heavy crowds during occasions such as the Palkhi procession, Ganeshotsav and other social and religious programmes. Police officials and residents say the surveillance system has enhanced public safety during such events and acted as a deterrent against criminal activities.

During interactions with residents while campaigning, Bidkar said citizen safety remains his top priority. He stated that plans are in place to further upgrade security infrastructure in the ward using modern technology. “Improving law and order and ensuring that residents can live without fear will continue to be my primary focus,” he said, adding that efforts would be made to provide better civic facilities and improve overall quality of life.

Residents have welcomed the CCTV initiative, noting that the increased surveillance has brought a greater sense of security to the area and strengthened coordination between citizens and the police.
