Pune residents suffered heavy losses in the Panshet dam burst on 12th July 1961, after which several schemes were implemented for the safety of the dams. Taking a step further, Khadakwasla has now taken up the task of generating electricity from the dam.

The project to generate electricity on the water released from Khadakwasla Dam into Mutha right canal was approved in 2006. Accordingly, the project will generate 1.2 MW of electricity through two generators of 600 KW. This power generation work has been given to a company on the BOT principle. The company was expected to complete the project by December 2010.

However, the company was not allowed to close the canal and carry out the excavation work. As a result, the work of the power generation project was stalled for some years.

“After the Khadakwasla dam releases water for agriculture in the canal, a powerhouse will be built at its starting and electricity will be generated by generators. After generating electricity, it will release water into the canal,” said Vijay Patil, Executive Engineer, Khadakwasla Irrigation Project.

The powerhouse was built after the construction of the Panshet, and Varasgaon dams. Both these dams generate electricity by discharging water from rock drains. It will also generate electricity from Khadakwasla on the same lines. One and a half to two kilowatts is sanctioned for a 500-square feet flat. Khadakwasla will generate enough electricity for 800 to 1000 flats.

The canal from the Khadakwasla dam runs for 170 days, so after releasing water for agriculture, electricity will be generated. Accordingly, it will be possible to generate electricity for six months of the year.
