Pune: Experts Opine About The Need For Awareness On Cyber Crime During The Marathi Social Media Sammelan

Pune, April 30, 2022: ‘Currently, cyber crimes include financial frauds, cyber bullying and stalking and citizens hesitate to file complaints for fear of defamation. However, the sooner a cyber crime is reported, the easier it is to take action. Therefore, citizens should come forward to lodge a complaint without any fear’ appealed cyber crime experts during the second Marathi Social Media Sammelan yesterday.
Cyber crime expert Adv. Vaishali Bhagwat, Sonali Patankar, Founder of Responsible Netizens and Dr. Rashmi Karandikar, Deputy Commissioner of Civil Defense were present during the discussion on Cyber Crime: Report Kara, Kaayda Aahe’. The discussion was moderated by Unmesh Joshi.
Speaking on the topic of current trends in cyber crime, Dr. Karandikar said, “Online financial crime is on the rise. These include insurance fraud with senior citizens and custom gift fraud with unmarried women. In addition, the rate of cyber stalking and cyber bullying is also high. The most common type of sexual assault on men is sextortion, with high rates of child sexual abuse.
Adv Bhagwat said, “Indian Penal Code includes cyber crime laws. POCSO is also a law for juvenile delinquency. There is a law for financial compensation, and social media companies are required to appoint a grievance officer to deal with complaints about offensive content. ”
Talking about cyber crime and the experiences of the victims, Patankar said, “Some of the young victims of cyber crime develop suicidal tendencies. At the same time, the language used on social media is very vulgar. But, often people do not complain about it out of fear. We need to keep in mind that anyone can fall victim to cyber crime at any time. Therefore, it needs to be recorded. There is a need to create awareness among the citizens about cyber crime.”
