Pune: Failure to Provide Helmets Could Lead to Action Against Two-Wheeler Dealers

Pune, 4th January 2025: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) issued a circular on Friday, warning two-wheeler dealers that they must provide two helmets to customers when selling a vehicle, as per Supreme Court directives. Failure to comply with this rule will result in action being taken against the dealers.
According to the Motor Vehicle Act, dealers are required to provide two helmets to every customer purchasing a two-wheeler. The court has issued orders in light of the rising number of accidents in the state, emphasizing the need for helmets. Despite these directives, there is a lack of awareness among citizens about this law. Many two-wheeler riders lose their lives due to not wearing helmets during accidents.
The State Transport Department had previously issued instructions to two-wheeler manufacturers and dealers, and informed all RTO offices across the state. However, it was found that compliance has been lacking. In response, the Pune RTO has now issued a specific circular to ensure that dealers provide helmets at the point of sale.
Swapnil Bhosale, Deputy Regional Transport Officer, Pune, stated, “It is mandatory for vehicle dealers to provide two helmets to the two-wheeler buyer. If a customer is not provided with helmets, they should file a complaint, and action will be taken against the dealer.”
This measure aims to raise awareness about helmet safety and reduce the number of fatalities in two-wheeler accidents across the state.
