Pune Fire Brigade Finds Fire Safety Violations at 36 Establishments, Sealing Notices Issued
Pune, 19th September 2026: The Pune Fire Brigade inspected 36 establishments in Shivajinagar, Navi Peth and Lohgaon as part of a citywide drive to check compliance with fire-safety regulations.
The inspections were conducted following directions from Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. The establishments inspected included 21 paying guest accommodations and hostels, 13 coaching classes, one study centre and one fitness gym.
According to a press note issued by the Fire Brigade, the inspection teams found that the establishments were not complying with mandatory fire-safety and civic regulations. Many were allegedly operating without the permissions required for their buildings or for running PG accommodations and hostels.
Officials said the establishments could not produce approvals or clearances from departments responsible for building permissions, drainage, water supply, trees, structural safety and taxation. They also reportedly lacked the mandatory fire no-objection certificate.
At several coaching centres, inspectors found inadequate safety arrangements for students. These included the absence of two separate doors, clearly marked emergency exits, fire-fighting equipment, safe staircases and passages, as well as permanent or temporary fire-protection systems.
The establishments have been served notices asking why they should not be sealed. Their operators have also been instructed to rectify the deficiencies and comply with the applicable regulations.
Chief Fire Officer Ganesh Sonune warned that strict action would be taken against establishments that fail to meet fire-safety requirements.
“Coaching centres and other establishments that do not comply with fire-safety regulations will face stringent action and be closed. Criminal cases will also be registered against the owners of non-compliant PG accommodations, coaching classes, schools and hospitals,” Sonune said in the press note.
The enforcement drive follows the PMC’s decision to conduct fire-safety audits of hospitals, PG accommodations, hostels, coaching centres and study facilities across Pune.
