Pune: Flamingos and Other Migratory Birds Flock to Ujani Dam, a Haven for Birdwatchers

Indapur, 6th January 2025: The tranquil catchment area of Ujani Dam, nestled between Pune and Solapur districts, has once again transformed into a picturesque haven for migratory birds, with the arrival of flocks of flamingos and other avian species. This annual phenomenon has turned the dam into a natural sanctuary, drawing bird enthusiasts and photographers from across the region.

Every winter, migratory flamingos from regions as far as Asia, North Siberia, Kenya, and Australia flock to the Ujani watershed. This year, despite a slight delay, these “foreign guests” have arrived in large numbers, taking advantage of the favorable habitat to nest and rear their young. Their striking presence, characterized by graceful water sports and their signature pink-hued plumage, has created a mesmerizing spectacle along the banks of the reservoir.

In addition to flamingos, a variety of seasonal migratory birds and local species have also been sighted in recent days, enriching the area’s biodiversity. The dam’s pristine environment, abundant food supply, and serene surroundings make it an ideal stopover and breeding ground for these avian visitors.

Birdwatchers and photographers have turned their attention to the Ujani Dam, capturing stunning images and videos of these birds in their natural habitat. The sight of flamingos wading in the waters, taking off in synchronized flight, and nurturing their chicks has become a major draw for nature enthusiasts.

This influx of migratory birds during the winter and summer months is a regular occurrence at Ujani Dam.
