Pune Flood Alert: Water Enters Homes in Shivane and Ektanagari After Khadakwasla Dam Release
Pune, 8th July 2026: Heavy rainfall across Pune city and the Khadakwasla dam catchment has pushed the Khadakwasla Dam to 100% capacity, prompting authorities to significantly increase water discharge into the Mutha River. As of 5:30 am on Wednesday, the dam was releasing 27,203 cusecs of water, triggering flood alerts for residents living in low-lying areas along the riverbank.
The increased discharge has already led to flooding in parts of the city. Water entered Dwarka and Jalpujan housing societies in the Ektanagari area on Sinhagad Road, while flooding was also reported from parts of Bhimnagar in Shivane. Civic officials said emergency response teams were immediately deployed to the affected locations.
The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Disaster Management Department, Fire Brigade and other civic agencies have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergency arising from the rising water levels. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas along the Mutha River to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
To assess the situation, Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure conducted an early morning inspection of flood-prone areas, including Rajput Slum, Pulachiwadi, Ektanagar, Nimbajan Nagar, Vitthalnagar and Shivajinagar. She interacted with local residents, reviewed the situation on the ground and directed officials to take immediate preventive measures.
Appealing to citizens to remain cautious, Nagpure said, “The Pune Municipal Corporation and the district administration are continuously monitoring the situation. Citizens should not pay attention to rumours and should follow only official advisories. All agencies are fully prepared to safeguard lives and property, and necessary assistance will be provided promptly wherever required.”
According to irrigation department data recorded till 6 am on Wednesday, the Khadakwasla catchment received 101 mm of rainfall over the previous 24 hours. The upper catchment dams also recorded heavy precipitation, with Panshet receiving 171 mm, Varasgaon 189 mm, and Temghar 245 mm.
The combined water storage in the four dams of the Khadakwasla project has reached 13.97 TMC (47.92%), while the total inflow into the reservoir system stood at 3,637 Mcft.
The discharge from Khadakwasla Dam was increased in phases through the night—from 842 cusecs shortly after midnight to 27,203 cusecs by early Wednesday morning—to manage the rapid inflow caused by intense rainfall.
With the Mutha River flowing at a significantly higher level, authorities have advised residents of riverside and low-lying localities to stay alert and cooperate with officials if evacuation becomes necessary. Rescue teams and emergency personnel remain on standby as the administration closely monitors the evolving flood situation.
