Pune Flood Prevention: 61 Key Sites Under Excavation, Major Works to Finish Before Monsoon

Pune, 25th April 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has accelerated flood prevention efforts across the city, commencing excavation and drainage upgrades at 61 critical locations to curb waterlogging and urban flooding ahead of the monsoon. With traffic police granting no-objection certificates (NOCs) for these sites, PMC officials confirm that most of the work will be completed by May 31st, significantly reducing the risk of flood incidents in vulnerable areas.
This initiative is part of a comprehensive flood risk management strategy, supported by a Rs 16 crore grant from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) under the 15th Finance Commission. The project targets 201 chronic waterlogging spots, focusing on constructing and upgrading stormwater drains, chambers, and slopes to enhance drainage capacity. In the first phase, tenders were issued for 83 projects, with 21 already underway. The remaining works, particularly those on main roads and busy intersections, are scheduled for night shifts to minimise traffic disruptions, as 60 out of 62 pending NOCs have been approved by traffic authorities.
To further bolster flood preparedness, PMC is deploying rapid-response teams equipped with pumps and generators for immediate water evacuation in case of unexpected water accumulation. These measures follow recent monsoon seasons that exposed the city’s vulnerability, prompting swift action and significant infrastructure investment to protect Pune residents and property from flood damage.
