Pune, 6th August 2025: With less than a month to go for the much-awaited Ganeshotsav celebrations, a fresh controversy has erupted in Pune over the timing of the Ganesh idol immersion (visarjan) procession. In response, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has stepped in to calm tensions, stating that “For me, all Ganesh Mandals are equal. A collective decision will be taken after discussions with all stakeholders.”

Traditionally, the immersion procession in Pune begins at 10 a.m. after the aarti of the first revered mandal, Shri Kasba Ganpati. However, several Ganesh mandals have recently taken a stand to start the procession at 7 a.m., citing various logistical and organizational reasons. This has led to disagreements between traditional and newer mandals, prompting the Pune Police to initiate dialogue.

Police Commissioner Meets Mandal Representatives
On Tuesday, Commissioner Amitesh Kumar held a meeting with several Ganesh mandal representatives to address the growing friction. He clarified that the current meeting was not a joint session but a step towards understanding individual viewpoints before a collective gathering is organized.

“There have been various issues raised in the last few days regarding the immersion procession. We are speaking to all mandals separately to understand their concerns. A joint meeting will soon be held where a unanimous and suitable decision will be taken,” said Kumar.

He emphasized that maintaining the sanctity, tradition, and unity of Pune’s Ganeshotsav is of utmost importance.

Positive Response from Kasba Ganpati Mandal
Shrikant Shete, President of Shri Kasba Ganpati Mandal, expressed optimism after the meeting. “The discussions were held in a very positive environment. We welcomed some of the suggestions made by the Pune Police. Ganeshotsav is a celebration for all, and every mandal is respected. The final decision will be taken collectively and communicated to the administration,” he said.

Diverging Views Among Mandals
The ongoing debate over immersion timings reflects a generational and organizational shift within the Ganeshotsav community.

Former Pune Mayor Ankush Kakade acknowledged the divide, stating, “Ganeshotsav in Pune, which begins on August 27, is world-famous. The issue of immersion timing has been debated for years, but this year, some mandals are taking a different stand. Today’s meeting with the Police Commissioner is a step in the right direction, and a resolution will be reached soon.”

Senior social activist Shrikant Shirole echoed similar sentiments, adding, “The festival has evolved over the years. If some mandals want to begin early, they should be allowed to do so. This doesn’t reduce the dignity of the traditional or respected mandals.”

What Lies Ahead
With Pune’s Ganeshotsav set to begin on August 27, the city administration is now focused on ensuring that the immersion procession — a massive event attended by lakhs of devotees — proceeds smoothly and harmoniously. All eyes are now on the upcoming joint meeting between the city police and the mandals, which will determine whether tradition holds or new arrangements are introduced.
