Pimpri, 6th August 2025: With the path now cleared for municipal elections to be conducted with Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has submitted its draft ward structure plan to the state’s Urban Development Department.

The proposal outlines a four-member ward system, similar to the 2017 civic polls, based on the 2011 census population figure of 17,27,692. As per the draft, the PCMC area will be divided into 32 electoral wards, from which 128 corporators will be elected.

According to the plan, 64 seats are reserved for women, maintaining gender parity in representation. The reservation breakup includes:
20 seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) – 10 for women
3 seats for Scheduled Tribes (ST) – 2 for women
35 seats for Other Backward Classes (OBC) – 18 for women
70 seats for General (Open) category – 34 for women

The ward formation began in the Talwade-Chikhli area and concluded in descending order till Sangvi-Dapodi. Each ward will represent a population ranging from 49,000 to 59,000 voters.

Assistant Commissioner of the Election Department, Avinash Shinde, said, “The draft ward structure plan has been submitted to the Urban Development Department. It includes 20 seats for SCs, three for STs, 35 for OBCs, and 70 for the open category. Reservation changes have been made due to the increasing population.”

After preliminary examination and corrections by the Urban Development Department, the draft will be forwarded to the State Election Commission (SEC) for final approval. Once cleared, the draft ward structure will be published on August 22, inviting objections and suggestions from August 22 to 28.

With this major step, Pimpri-Chinchwad has moved closer to holding long-pending civic elections. The upcoming polls are expected to reshape the city’s political landscape, especially after the inclusion of OBC quota, which had delayed elections earlier.
