Pune: Ganeshotsav 2025; Dry Days, Safer Streets & Non-Stop Metro – How Pune is Gearing Up for the Festivities
Pune, 25th August 2025: As the city gears up to welcome Lord Ganesha, the Pune district administration has rolled out a series of measures to ensure that the 10-day Ganeshotsav celebrations remain safe, smooth, and inclusive for everyone. From alcohol bans on key dates to round-the-clock metro services, this year’s festival promises to be as disciplined as it is vibrant.
Why a Complete Alcohol Ban?
Ganesh Chaturthi and Anant Chaturdashi mark the most important days of the festival, attracting massive crowds to public mandals and immersion routes. To maintain peace and order, District Collector Jitendra Dudi has ordered a complete liquor sale ban across Pune district on September 27 and October 6.
In addition, central Pune—areas under Khadak, Vishrambag, and Faraskhana police stations—will enforce a stricter 10-day prohibition from September 27 to October 6. Officials believe this will help prevent alcohol-related incidents and ensure safer celebrations.
Liquor Shop Closures Along Procession Routes
During the festival’s busiest days—the 5th and 7th days, when multiple processions converge—liquor outlets along major immersion routes will remain shut. These include:
Tilak Road: Jedhe Chowk to Alka Chowk
Laxmi Road: Sant Kabir Chowk to Alka Chowk
Karve Road: Nal Stop to Khandojibaba Chowk
Jangali Maharaj Road: SG Barve Chowk to Khandojibaba Chowk
and several other arterial stretches connecting the city’s key procession points.
Police and civic officials have appealed to residents and shop owners for voluntary cooperation, emphasising that public participation is crucial to the success of the ban.
Metro to Run Non-Stop on Immersion Days
With lakhs of devotees expected to throng Pune’s streets, traffic congestion is a perennial Ganeshotsav challenge. This year, Pune Metro is stepping in with a festival-special schedule:
Aug 27–29: Regular hours (6:00 AM – 11:00 PM)
Aug 30–Sept 5: Extended hours (6:00 AM – 2:00 AM)
Sept 6–7 (Anant Chaturdashi weekend): Continuous 41-hour service (6:00 AM on Sept 6 to 11:00 PM on Sept 7)
From Sept 8: Normal schedule resumes.
Officials hope that the round-the-clock metro will reduce vehicular load, help devotees travel safely, and encourage more people to use public transport.
Why These Measures Matter
Ganeshotsav is more than just a religious festival; it’s Pune’s cultural heartbeat. With lakhs of devotees, tourists, and community volunteers participating, the challenge of managing safety, traffic, and public order is immense. By combining strict alcohol prohibition, enhanced law enforcement, and continuous public transport, the administration aims to create a safe, family-friendly festival atmosphere.
