Pune, 24th July 2023: Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics hosted a session titled ‘India-Pakistan: Peace In Our Lifetime?’ on Thursday (July 20). The seminar, led by distinguished political scientist, author, and emeritus Professor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed from Stockholm University, Sweden, delved into the possibilities of achieving lasting peace between the two nations. Chaired by Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajit Ranade, the event provided valuable insights and constructive discussions on this critical topic.

Dr Ajit Ranade, in his opening remarks, set the tone for the session by sharing a compelling anecdote from the great epic, Mahabharata. He highlighted Lord Krishna’s earnest attempts to advocate for peace before the inevitable war took place. Dr Ranade emphasised the significance of leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of peace—a timeless lesson relevant to contemporary India-Pakistan relations.

Dr Ishtiaq Ahmed, spoke at length about the complexities surrounding the not-so-amicable relations between the two nuclear-armed nations. With a note of optimism, he asserted that peace between India and Pakistan remains entirely plausible within our lifetime. Citing the Indus Water Treaty of the 1960s as a prime example, Dr Ahmed showcased the positive outcomes of giving peace a chance through mutual engagements. Having extensively travelled both nations, he shared his realisation that the people on both sides do not harbour hatred or hostility towards each other. In fact, they earnestly desire friendly relations. Highlighting the successes of India over the past 75 years, Dr Ahmed acknowledged that Pakistan has faced its share of challenges and dilemmas. However, he remained optimistic, emphasising that there is still time for both nations to forge a brighter future.

Offering practical solutions for nurturing peace, Dr Ahmed proposed that Pakistan and India engage in dialogue through official diplomatic channels and promote people-to-people interactions. He stressed the significance of panel discussions between scholars from both sides to dispel misconceptions and change public perception. Moreover, Dr Ahmed urged Pakistan to take decisive actions against terrorism and extremism, addressing India’s legitimate concerns. Lastly, he suggested easing travel restrictions for individuals aged 65 and above, facilitating reunions between separated families and friends and fostering stronger ties.

The seminar concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session facilitated by Sankalp Gujar. Dr Ahmed answered each query candidly, providing valuable insights into various perspectives.
