Pune: Gridlock Traffic And Recent Accident Raise Concerns Near Tilekar Chowk

Pune, 14th August 2023: The area around Tilekar Chowk and Khadi Machine Police Chowki is currently dealing with a growing traffic problem causing inconvenience and safety concerns for commuters. Tragically, on August 10, 2023, a fatal accident occurred near Khadi Machine Chowk in Kondhwa, resulting in a loss of life. Additionally, two separate accidents in the last two days have claimed the lives of two individuals.
This marks the second incident In Last Two Days on the Katraj-Kondhwa road where a pedestrian has been fatally hit. Just recently, a 70-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a truck near Maulinagar Chowk. Known as one of the busiest bypass routes in the city, this road is frequently used by heavy vehicles heading towards Solapur, connecting to the Pune-Bengaluru Highway near Narhe.
The ongoing congestion at these junctions has transformed into a pressing issue, causing a ripple of anxiety among local residents. The situation has worsened to a point where individuals have shared accounts of being immobilized for upwards of thirty minutes due to the relentless traffic snarls.
A prevailing sentiment of fear and unease hangs over the community, as the heavy traffic not only impedes daily commutes but also fuels concerns about the potential for further accidents in the area. Amidst these challenging circumstances, some residents have resorted to drastic measures, refraining from utilizing their personal vehicles, including cars and motorcycles. The suffocating gridlock has even compelled them to curtail outdoor activities, highlighting the significant disruption the traffic chaos has wrought on their lives.
With daily congestion woes becoming a harsh reality, individuals are increasingly exploring alternative routes to navigate the vicinity. Amidst the distress, a glimmer of hope shines through in the form of an upcoming alternate road.
The situation has prompted local citizens to advocate for the widening of the affected road, which experiences severe traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. This stretch is also frequently used by vehicles seeking to bypass the city and access the Pune-Bengaluru Highway en route to Solapur. Acknowledging the gravity of the issue, the Municipal Commissioner conducted an on-site inspection and engaged in discussions with the local community. According to officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), these efforts are aimed at addressing the challenges tied to land acquisition, which is deemed pivotal to resolving the ongoing problem.
As Tilekar Chowk and the area opposite Khadi Machine Police Chowki continue to grapple with incessant traffic congestion and the aftermath of the recent tragic accident, the residents remain hopeful for a more manageable and safer commuting experience in the near future.
