Islampur, 4th July 2025: A 44-year-old gynaecologist from Bibvewadi, Pune, was found dead under suspicious circumstances near her car on the Bengaluru highway in Sangli district’s Islampur area on Tuesday evening. The woman, a mother of two and currently employed at a multidisciplinary hospital in Pune, was discovered with deep injury marks on her wrist and neck.

According to police, the body was found near her hatchback car, parked about 200 km from Pune. While investigations are ongoing, authorities are not ruling out the possibility of suicide.
“Initial evidence indicates she was driving alone from Pune towards Nipani. She appears to have turned back before halting at the spot where her body was discovered,” said Inspector Sanjay Harugade of Islampur Police Station. “CCTV footage from toll booths and nearby establishments supports that she was travelling solo.”

The doctor had reportedly left her home on Tuesday morning, telling her family she was going to work. Her phone had been switched off since then, police said.

Authorities found traces of blood inside the vehicle and a trail leading to the rear, where the body was discovered. “A surgical blade was recovered from the scene. It appears she may have harmed herself while inside the car, then exited and collapsed near the vehicle,” Inspector Harugade added. “Preliminary post-mortem findings suggest death occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:00 pm due to heavy blood loss from multiple wrist cuts. Shallow marks were also observed on her neck, possibly an attempt to inflict further injury.”

The deceased had been going through emotional distress, police sources said. The family had relocated to Pune from Mumbai’s Mulund area after their jointly-run clinic shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic. She had recently joined the Pune hospital and was reportedly on extended leave during the last two months.

“She was associated with us for a short time,” said a spokesperson of the hospital where she worked. “Out of her two-month tenure, she was on leave for about 15 days. We are deeply saddened by her demise and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family.”

The woman is survived by her husband and two children — a son studying in Class X and a daughter in Class VII.

Police were alerted by a passerby who noticed the woman lying unresponsive near the car. She was rushed to the nearby sub-district government hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
