Hadapsar, 30th April 2026: In a move aimed at strengthening grassroots sports infrastructure, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved a proposal worth ₹11.61 crore for setting up a sports nursery project in Hadapsar. The proposal, placed before the Standing Committee, has received its nod, paving the way for further approvals and phased funding in upcoming budgets.
According to Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale, the process to secure final approval from the general body has been initiated. The project will be developed on a reserved playground plot located along Magarpatta Road in Hadapsar, covering an area of approximately 10,441 square metres.
Civic officials said the design for the project has been prepared by an empanelled architect of the PMC, based on requirements from the sports department. Civil and electrical works will be undertaken as per the approved plan.
The sports nursery project is primarily aimed at encouraging children in the 3 to 12 age group to take an interest in sports, build a connection with playgrounds, and gain exposure to various games at an early stage.
The proposed facility will include infrastructure for multiple sports such as modified football, basketball, hockey, volleyball, a 200-metre running track, table tennis, roller skating, badminton, lawn tennis, and an open gym.
As per estimates prepared by the PMC’s building department, the total project cost is pegged at ₹11.61 crore. The project is expected to be completed within two to three years. The civic body has planned phased expenditure, allocating ₹4 crore in 2026–27, ₹4 crore in 2027–28, and ₹3.61 crore in 2028–29.
An initial provision of ₹1 crore has been made in the 2025–26 budget for sports nursery facilities. However, officials stated that this amount is insufficient considering the overall project cost.
Accordingly, a proposal has been submitted under Section 72(B) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, to allocate additional funds in subsequent budgets.
The proposal has already received approval from Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. Once it secures final clearance from the general body, the implementation of the project is expected to gain momentum.
Officials said the initiative is significant for promoting a sports culture among young children in Pune and nurturing talent at an early age.
