Pune, 23rd May 2026: After the successful implementation of appointing around 150 surveyors to speed up the disposal of pending land measurement applications, the Maharashtra Land Records Department has now decided to appoint nearly 1,500 private surveyors across the state on a consolidated pay basis.

The move aims to ensure faster and more transparent disposal of land measurement cases. Officials said the process of appointing private surveyors, providing them training, and assigning field work is expected to take around three months. The department has set a target of disposing of land measurement applications within 30 days after the new system becomes operational.

The state government had earlier decided to appoint trained licensed surveyors and surveying agencies in every district for speedy resolution of land measurement-related matters. Under this initiative, around 50 surveyors were appointed in Pune district through a private agency.

However, considering the large number of pending land measurement applications in Pune city and district, the Land Records Department has now decided to increase the number of private surveyors further. Around 40 additional private surveyors will be appointed in Pune, taking the total number of surveyors to more than 200.

Taking the initiative a step further, the department has now planned to appoint around 1,500 private surveyors across Maharashtra.

Settlement Commissioner Dr. Shailesh Naval said that approximately 50 surveyors will be appointed in smaller districts, while larger districts will get around 100 surveyors each. These appointments will be made on a fixed honorarium basis.

He said the selected candidates will undergo training at the Land Records Training Academy in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar before being assigned field duties.

According to officials, the entire process, including appointments and training, is expected to take at least three months. The objective behind the initiative is to reduce the disposal time for land measurement applications to 30 days.

Officials said Pune alone currently has around 40,000 to 50,000 pending land measurement applications, while an additional 4,000 to 5,000 new applications are filed every month. The decision has been taken to speed up the disposal process.

Candidates eligible to work as private surveyors include those with ITI qualifications in surveying, diploma or degree holders in civil engineering, and graduates in geoinformatics. Retired land survey employees with at least 10 years of service will also be eligible to work up to the age of 65.

Selected candidates will undergo departmental training followed by an examination. Successful candidates will receive a licence valid for two years from the Land Records Training Academy in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
