Pune: Heavy Rains Lash Pune; City Records Season’s Second-Highest Rainfall as Monsoon Intensifies
Reported by Akshata Pawar
Pune, 19th August 2025: Pune city experienced a significant spike in monsoonal activity over the last 24 hours, with Shivajinagar recording 35.2 mm of rainfall, the highest single-day total since June 14 and the second highest of the monsoon season so far. Other city areas, including Lavale (46.5 mm), Pashan (43 mm), and Chinchwad (39.2 mm), also witnessed intense rainfall, underlining the increasing severity of the ongoing wet spell.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall alerts for Pune and adjoining regions, with a particular emphasis on Konkan and the ghat areas of Pune and Satara, advising citizens to avoid non-essential travel to these zones.
Vigorous Monsoon Systems Fuel Intense Rainfall Across Region
The prevailing weather conditions are attributed to multiple active monsoon systems:
A depression over the south interior of Odisha is moving west-northwestward, expected to weaken gradually but continue to influence widespread rain activity.
The monsoon trough currently extends through regions including Surat, Nandurbar, and Amravati, providing favorable conditions for sustained rainfall.
An upper air cyclonic circulation over the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat, and a shear zone along 20°N, are further intensifying the rain-bearing systems.
Additionally, an offshore trough from Gujarat to Kerala is strengthening the west coast monsoon surge.
These systems collectively are contributing to widespread heavy rainfall across Maharashtra, particularly in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall predicted.
According to IMD’s Impact-Based Forecast (IBF):
-Localized flooding of roads and waterlogging in low-lying areas, particularly in urban pockets.
-Disruption of traffic and travel delays due to submerged roads.
-Visibility reduction during intense rainfall events.
-Minor damage to kutcha roads and potential damage to vulnerable structures.
-Risk of landslides and mudslides in hilly and ghat regions.
-Damage to horticulture and standing crops due to water inundation.
-Possible riverine flooding in some catchments.
Action Advised:
-Check traffic conditions before travel and avoid waterlogged areas.
-Follow local disaster management and weather advisories closely.
-Avoid travel to the Konkan and Pune ghat regions, especially during peak rain hours.
-Stay indoors if living in vulnerable structures or landslide-prone areas.
With Mumbai’s Santacruz station recording 94.8 mm in just 3 hours, and Pune receiving heavy rainfall, IMD has urged citizens to stay alert.
