Pune: Heavy Tourist Rush in Lonavala-Khandala During Diwali Holidays; Traffic Slows Near Borghat
Lonavala, 26th October 2025: The popular hill stations of Lonavala and Khandala witnessed a massive influx of tourists over the weekend, as visitors from across Maharashtra and other states flocked to the region to celebrate the Diwali holidays.
On Saturday, large crowds were seen in Lonavala, Khandala, and nearby tourist spots such as Bhaje Caves, Lohagad, Visapur Fort, Pavana Dam, and various water sports locations in Maval. The Karla area and Vehergaon also saw a surge in devotees visiting the famous Ai Ekveera Temple and Ekveera Fort for darshan.
The local markets were bustling with activity as tourists thronged shops and eateries. “This trend of post-Diwali tourism has been growing over the last few years. We’ve seen a rise in visitors, especially from Mumbai and Gujarat,” said local businessman Sameer Ingle.
The heavy tourist traffic led to congestion near Dasturi at Borghat on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, with vehicles moving slowly toward Pune. Temporary queues of vehicles were also reported at Vehergaon and Lonavala.
Adding to the weekend’s charm, moderate rainfall in the Lonavala area on Saturday afternoon provided some relief from the persistent October heat, allowing tourists to enjoy the scenic weather.
Local traders described the festive season as a boon for business, remarking that “Lakshmi truly arrived in every household” this Diwali, as the region saw a lively and prosperous weekend.
