Pune, 17th September 2022: Heavy rain is going on in the catchment area of all four dams in the Khadakwasla Dam Chain Project. As a result, all these four dams are 100 per cent full. Therefore, water was released from Varasgaon and Panshet dams to Khadakwasla dam and from Khadakwasla dam to Mutha river basin at the highest speed of 30,677 cusecs this season.

The water resources department has warned that if the rain continues in the area of the dams, there will be a further increase in the release of water from the Khadakwasla dam.

Since Monday (September 12), rains have been occurring in the catchment areas of all the four dams, Temghar, Varasgaon, Panshet and Khadakwasla, which supply water to the city, while the release of water from Varasgaon and Panshet dams to Khadakwasla dam has been started since Tuesday.

As a result, water started to be released from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river. Heavy rain has been falling in the catchment areas of all four dams for the past two days.

On Friday (September 16) till morning and then during the day, there was heavy rain, 10,246 cusecs of water were released from 7.00 am. After that, the discharge was increased to 30,677 cusecs after the evening by gradually increasing the discharge, informed the water resources department.

Meanwhile, the Khadakwasla dam was 100 per cent full on July 11 this season after the monsoons became active. At that time, 13,000 cusecs of water were released into the Mutha river from this dam. Then in August, 26,000 cusecs were released into the Mutha river. Then on Friday, the season’s maximum of 30,677 cusecs was released into the river.

If the heavy rain in the catchment area of the dams continues, the discharge from Varasgaon dam to Panshet and from Panshet dam to Khadakwasla dam and from Khadakwasla dam to Mutha river will increase further. Therefore, the water resources department has issued a warning to the residents of the river bank.

The discharge capacity of Khadakwasla dam is 98,766 cusecs. However, water from three dams Temghar, Varasgaon and Panshet, which supply water to the city, is released into Khadakwasla Dam, after which water is released into the Mutha River from Khadakwasla Dam. Therefore, the water resources department explained that more water can be released from the Khadakwasla dam than the discharge capacity.
