Pune: Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 to Open by March After Successful Trial
Hinjawadi, 8th January 2026 The technical trial run of Pune Metro Line 3 (Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar), which will link the Hinjewadi IT hub with the city, was successfully conducted today at 8 a.m. between Mann Depot and Pune University Chowk. This marks a significant step toward making the corridor operational, entering a decisive phase of the project.
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is executing the 23.3-km elevated corridor under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in collaboration with the Tata Group and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited. The first trial run between Maan Depot and Pune University was conducted in July 2025, followed by another in August 2025 up to the Balewadi Sports Complex. A recent trial three days ago had identified some technical issues, which were addressed with the support of the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).
PMRDA Commissioner Yogesh Mhase said, “The Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro is highly anticipated by citizens, particularly the thousands of IT employees in Hinjewadi. The corridor will significantly improve connectivity to Pune city and help ease traffic congestion around University Chowk and Ganeshkhind Road.
Construction is progressing rapidly, with station buildings, platforms, entry–exit facilities, and essential services nearing completion. The aim is to open most stations to passengers by March 31. More than 10 metro trainsets have already been delivered, and a total of 22 trainsets will be available as per the approved schedule. All involved agencies are coordinating to ensure full operationalization of the project.”
The trials evaluated critical parameters, including corridor safety, track geometry, power supply, emergency braking, coach stability, and performance on curves. Officials confirmed that vibrations and movements at high speeds remained within safe limits. The successful completion of these tests clears the way for the next phases of trials and eventual passenger services.
