Pune, 7th December 2024: The Maharashtra government has mandated the establishment of Hirkani Rooms in public, semi-public, institutional, and educational buildings where a significant number of women work. These rooms, designed to assist lactating mothers, pregnant women, and mothers with children below six years of age, are now a required facility under the state’s Integrated Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDPCR).

The Women and Child Development Department highlighted the need for this initiative, noting that many women face challenges due to the absence of such facilities in public spaces. Acting on these concerns, the Urban Development Department included a new provision in the UDPCR to ensure the availability of dedicated women’s rooms in public and institutional structures.

Dr. Pratibha Bhadane, Joint Secretary of the Urban Development Department, issued an official notification outlining the criteria for Hirkani Rooms. These rooms must be located on the ground floor or first floor, equipped with adequate lighting, ventilation, and toilet facilities to ensure the comfort of women.

The move aims to provide essential support for working mothers, creating a more inclusive and accommodating environment in workplaces and public spaces across Maharashtra.
