Pune: Illegal Sex Determination Racket Busted, Accused Moved Around In Car For Examining Pregnant Women

Indapur, 14th May 2022: The Pune rural police along with the health department officials have exposed an illegal sex determination racket in Indapur taluka of the district.

Based on a complaint, police have registered a case against Praveen Popatrao Deshmukh (32), Toushif Ahmed Shaikh (20), both residents of Rajale in Paithan taluka of Satara district and Pravin Sitaram Khade of Akluj in Solapur district. Deshmukh is a technician at a diagnostic centre, Shaikh is his driver while Khade had come for the test on his wife.

An FIR has been registered against them at Indapur police station for offences under relevant sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994.

According to the police, Dr Santosh Khamkar, medical superintendent of the sub-district hospital (SDH) in Indapur, had received information about the illegal sex determination racket going on in a Baleno car. After that, Dr Khamkar informed the police about this. A team of medical experts comprising Dr Khamkar, Dr Eknath Chandanshive, Dr Shrikrishna Kharmate, Dr Amol Khanaware and police then began chasing the car on Friday (May 13).

A couple had come on a two-wheeler on Indapur-Akluj Road. After that, the couple got into the car and the car sped away. The car stopped near a stream in the Bhandgaon area. A team of police and medical experts also arrived. An inspection of the car at that time revealed that Deshmukh was examining the pregnant woman. All of them were taken into custody.

Further investigation is going on.
