Pune, 17th June 2021: The financial committee set up at the municipal level to curb the financial woes of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and not to waste the money on unnecessary work has succumbed to pressure from the ruling party corporators. Proposals for minor works in the ward will be approved by the committee and at least Rs 300 crore will be spent in the next two months for these works.

The Covid19 pandemic affected the municipal revenue. A financial committee was set up at the municipal level to curb unnecessary work and to divert funds on low income but high expenditure health services. The work proposals were being approved through this committee. The financial plan for the same was also being finalized by the committee.

However, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators and other party corporators had objected to the committee by saying that the development of the city was being hampered due to the committee. The corporators had complained with the standing committee chairman Hemant Rasane.

After that, a meeting was held between Rasane and Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar. At that time, the corporators were allowed to do 30% of the work from the funds reserved in the budget.

As things go back to near-normal, PMC is looking for new sources of income growth due to declining revenue. Given this, it is proposed to sell the vacant space reserved for the service sector, a long-term lease and the policy of selling flats in a building owned by the corporation has been adopted by the corporation. Even so, most of the unnecessary projects are being given a green flag.

This is the last year before the municipal elections; hence, corporators repeatedly appealed that development work could not be carried out in the ward due to corona infection. Due to this, considering the forthcoming elections, there is a possibility of money being spent on the minor works as well as on those in good condition. If the income of the corporation increases, the work will be allowed in phases.
