Pune, 15th April 2021: As the Coronavirus spread increases in Maharashtra, the weekly market moving from one place to another place has been closed. Consequently, it has led to a shortage of goats and sheep, resulting in a sharp rise in the price of mutton. In the last week, the price of mutton has gone up by Rs 40 to Rs 60 per kg.

During the week, sellers bring goats and sheep for sale in the market. However, Corona infection has been on the rise in the state for the last fortnight. Villages in western Maharashtra have been closed for weeks. As a result, shepherds have stopped selling sheep and goats in the market.

Prabhakar Kamble, president of the Pune Meat Shopkeepers’ Association said that the prices have gone up as goats and sheep are not readily available to the meat sellers due to the closure of the weekly market. The market is currently experiencing a shortage of chicken and fish also. Bird flu had affected the poultry business. As a result, the inflow of chicken is declining. In the month of Chaitra, there is a demand for mutton in the village fairs. Restrictions have made it difficult for meat vendors to get goats and sheep, he added.

In the last week, the meat price hiked by Rs 50 per kg. In Sangli, the Chicken is being sold for Rs 200 per kg in the retail market, while meat sells for Rs 700 per kg (with fat) and Rs 750 per kg (fatless). Mumbai and Thane are also experiencing a price hike; the meat here is being sold for Rs 700 per Kg.

The shortage may lead to a further price hike, predicted the sellers.
