Pune: Inmate Altercation Turns Violent in Yerwada Central Jail, Multiple Injuries Reported
Pune, 20th June 2023: An altercation erupted within Yerwada Central Jail, resulting in a violent clash among inmates and leaving approximately 16 prisoners injured. The incident occurred on Monday morning around 10-10:30 am when a minor dispute escalated rapidly. The local police have subsequently filed a case against six individuals involved, citing relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The charges pressed against the accused include the act of voluntarily causing harm using dangerous weapons, participating in an unlawful assembly, among others. Hemant Ingole, an officer at Yerwada, filed the official complaint documenting the incident.
According to reports, three inmates sustained head injuries requiring stitches, while others suffered minor wounds on their head, back, and shoulder.
Senior Police Inspector, Balkrishna Kadam from Yerwada police station, confirmed that between ten to sixteen inmates have been implicated in connection with the clash. The incident transpired in Barrack No. 8 on June 19, shedding light on the pressing need for bolstered security measures within the prison premises.
