Baner, 9th August 2025: Pune Municipal Corporation has initiated the construction of the city’s first air-conditioned (AC) public toilet at Baner, with an investment of approximately ₹87 lakh.

This initiative forms part of a broader plan to build five state-of-the-art, AC-equipped toilets near key entry points to the city. Other proposed locations include near Baner’s Zakat Naka, adjacent to Swargate ST station, Shewalwadi, Katraj, and Wagholi. The estimated cost for completing all five facilities is around ₹4.31 crore, with the other four proposals already submitted to the standing committee.

The aim is to provide well-equipped sanitation facilities for the large number of commuters arriving in Pune from outlying areas for work. The facilities will include bathing and changing areas, along with amenities like mobile and laptop charging stations, and Wi-Fi access. Maintenance and repairs will be handled by private contractors, and usage fees will be determined by the municipal general body.

Currently, Pune has roughly 1,200 public toilets. However, many are underutilized due to lack of electricity and water supply, and there is a noted shortage of adequate facilities for women.

Following concerns raised by Deputy Chief Minister and Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar regarding the state of public toilets, the municipality decided to proceed with the AC-toilet initiative at strategic city entrances.
