Pune IRS Officer Anwesh’s Low-Budget Film Selected for International New York Film Festival
Pune, 10th September 2025: Kathakar Ki Diary (The Story of Ordinary Lives), a low-budget independent film by IRS officer Anwesh, has been officially selected for the prestigious International New York Film Festival (INYFF). Anwesh, who serves as Joint Commissioner in the GST Department in Pune, has balanced his bureaucratic role with his passion for cinema, proving that creativity thrives even without big budgets or banners.
Shot across Mumbai, Pune, Odisha, and Jharkhand, the film was made with a small crew and features nearly 200 theatre artists and technicians from across these regions. Despite his demanding job, Anwesh dedicated his nights to shooting and post-production, demonstrating his commitment to storytelling.
A significant highlight of Kathakar Ki Diary is the contribution of National Award-winning editor Aseem Sinha, known for his work with legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. Sinha was so moved by the project that he edited the film free of charge, underscoring the spirit of collaboration that defines the project. Krishna and Biswa Behura from FTII, Pune, also played a crucial role in post-production.
Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha, who attended a private screening in Mumbai, praised the film, comparing it to the timeless works of Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen. “Anwesh’s film reminds me of my FTII days. It is an international-level craft with realistic, living characters. Despite limited resources, his cinematic passion shines through,” Sinha said.
The film has already garnered praise from filmmaker Sejal Shah, producer Krishika Lulla, director Sai Kabir, as well as social activists Rekha Rao and Gauri Sawant. Featuring artists such as Kapil Bhagwat, Yogesh Jadhav, Baby Aarohi Chatterjee, Ashlesha Sundermal, and Daniel Vincent, the performances have been appreciated for their authenticity and emotional depth.
Kathakar Ki Diary is described as a cinematic tribute to the struggles and dreams of ordinary people. Its selection at INYFF proves that authentic storytelling can transcend budgetary limitations and reach international platforms.
Anwesh’s achievement goes beyond the success of a film—it reflects his dedication to art, perseverance, and the power of collaborative effort. With Kathakar Ki Diary now set to be showcased globally, it marks a proud moment for Indian independent cinema.
