Camp, 3rd December 2023: A jeweler was stabbed near Bhopala Chowk in the Camp area on Saturday night, as captured by CCTV footage showing two assailants chasing and attacking the victim. Police apprehended one of the attackers with the help of a slipper left behind at the scene.

The victim, identified as Vijay Mehta of Mehta Jewelers, suffered serious injuries in the incident, leading to the registration of a case at Lashkar police station late at night.

Mehta, who owns the jewelry business in the Center Street area of Camp, left the shop around 9 pm on Saturday to return home. It was during this journey that he was attacked by assailants wielding a chopper (Koyta). Mehta fell on the road and then managed to escape into a nearby lane, pursued by the attackers.

The news of a bullion dealer being stabbed in the market on Center Street triggered panic. Mehta was promptly admitted to a private hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Police successfully arrested one of the accused, Yuvraj Ghodke of Hadapsar, based on CCTV footage and the identification of his slipper found at the crime scene. Ghodke had also posted a video on Instagram, featuring the same distinctive slipper.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Smartana Patil told Punekar News, “During interrogation, the accused stated that the victim had accused his mother of theft, leading to her being called to the police station for questioning. He claims it was a false accusation, and his mother, distressed by the incident, cried a lot. Consequently, he felt angry and sought revenge. The attack is a result of this chain of events. We are examining his records, as some cases have been filed against the accused in the past. Further investigation is ongoing.”
