Camp, 21st January 2024: The ongoing administrative boundary dispute between Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Cantonment limits has resulted in a concerning issue of accumulating garbage along the canals from St. Patrick’s Cathedral to Bhagwan Tatyasaheb (BT) Kawade Road. The affected citizens are expressing their displeasure as the administration seems to be neglecting the issue.

The specific area of concern is a two-wheeler-only road from BT Kawade Road adjacent to the canal to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Half of this road falls under the jurisdiction of the Pune Municipal Corporation, while the other half, on the side of St. Patrick’s Church is within the Pune Cantonment limits. The garbage accumulation on this road is reportedly due to delays in the cantonment administration’s waste management efforts.

Citizens have raised concerns about the health hazards posed by unattended garbage, especially as traders often set up shop along the roadside to sell fruits and food items. The lack of timely garbage pickup and cleaning efforts by the cantonment administration is contributing to the worsening situation.

Residents are urging the concerned administration to address the issue promptly and ensure regular cleaning of the affected area. The accumulation of garbage along the canal is not only an eyesore but also a potential threat to public health.

Moreover, the problem is exacerbated by the littering habits of some citizens and businessmen who, while commuting, dispose of waste irresponsibly along the canal. Both administrations have issued appeals to citizens to refrain from open littering and to dispose of waste properly in designated bins to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the area.
