Pune: Karnataka Mangoes Fill Market Gap As Alphonso Season Nears End In Konkan

Market Yard, 5th May 2025: As the Alphonso (Hapus) mango season in Maharashtra’s Konkan region nears its end, the arrival of mangoes from Karnataka has surged in local markets. Over the past few years, Karnataka mangoes, which closely resemble Alphonso in taste, have seen rising demand. This year, due to adverse climatic conditions, Alphonso production has declined, further increasing reliance on Karnataka’s yield. The Karnataka mangoes are expected to remain available in the market until mid-June.
The Tumkur region of Karnataka is a major hub for mango cultivation. Although the harvest there typically begins by 15th April, this year’s season started about 15 days late. Despite the delay, the initial supply to markets has been strong.
A mango trader at Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard, stated that the Alphonso season will conclude early this year. Mango arrivals from key Konkan districts—Devgad, Ratnagiri, and Raigad—have significantly dropped. “With Alphonso becoming scarce, consumer demand for Karnataka mangoes is expected to increase. Their season will likely extend until around 15th June,” the trader stated further.
On Sunday (4th May), between 5,000 and 7,000 wooden crates of Karnataka mangoes arrived at the market yard, each containing between three and five dozen mangoes. Additionally, two-dozen boxes of Karnataka Alphonso were also available for sale. In total, approximately 20,000 boxes entered the market that day, along with 5,000 crates of other mango varieties such as Lalbagh, Pairi, and Badami.
Current Market Rates for Karnataka Mangoes:
– Karnataka Alphonso (3 to 5 dozen per crate): ₹1,000 to ₹1,600
– Karnataka Alphonso (2 dozen crate): ₹300 to ₹500
– Pairi (4 dozen crate): ₹1,000 to ₹1,500
– Lalbagh: ₹40 to ₹60 per kg
– Badami: ₹40 to ₹50 per kg
