Pune, 25th November 2025: The Land Records Department is preparing to cancel nearly 700 land measurement maps after applicants failed to respond to a final notice issued in September. The department had earlier given 1,400 landowners—whose plots were measured under the old vahivat (customary) method—an opportunity to get their boundaries officially remeasured as per current legal procedures. Only half completed the process.

The vahivat method, used for more than two decades, was officially discontinued in February this year following an order from the Settlement Commissioner. Despite this, some offices continued using the outdated system, and around 1,400 such cases were identified in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, PMRDA limits and various parts of the district.

Those who had already paid for land measurement were given one final chance to regularize their boundaries, and notices were issued in September. While 700 applicants completed the mandatory remeasurement, the remaining 700 did not respond.

Officials have now confirmed that the vahivat maps of these pending cases will be cancelled.

Under the updated rules, all land measurements must follow a formal legal process, include the consent of all co-owners and be supported by temporary layout approval from the concerned municipal or development authority. The department has stressed that all future measurements must strictly adhere to this revised procedure.
