Pune: Landslide at Historic Lohagad Fort Triggers Safety Concerns
Lonavala, 8th June 2025: A section of the historic Lohagad (Lohgarh) Fort in Maval taluka, Pune district, collapsed on Saturday evening, triggering a landslide near Bhaje village. Fortunately, no casualties or property damage were reported.
The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on the northern slope of the fort, which faces Bhaje village. Alarmed by the loud sound of falling rocks, local residents quickly alerted disaster management authorities and the revenue department.
Though the landslide was minor, it has raised concerns among residents and officials. The village of Lohgarh, located on the eastern side of the fort and home to over 650 people, sits at the base of the structure. Bhaje village, to the north, lies closest to the affected area.
According to local authorities, the region has experienced continuous heavy rainfall over the past 15 days, which likely weakened the hillside and triggered the collapse. Maval Tehsildar Vikram Deshmukh confirmed the incident and said, “We’ve received reports of a collapse on the fort’s northern side. No loss of life or property has occurred, but an investigation is underway.”
In response, the revenue department and local administration have advised villagers to remain cautious due to the potential risk of further landslides. Gram Panchayat officials, along with the police patil, sarpanch, and gram sevak, have issued alerts urging residents to stay vigilant during the ongoing monsoon season.
Emergency response teams remain on standby, and precautionary measures are being taken to monitor the stability of the area. Authorities also emphasized that unpredictable weather patterns continue to pose threats to hilly and heritage sites across Maharashtra.
Although there is no immediate danger, officials are continuing to assess the structural integrity of the fort to ensure public safety.
