Pune: Microsoft, CYDA and Maharashtra Forest Department Join Hands for Eco-Restoration in Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary

Pune, 8th June 2025: A new sustainable tourism initiative has been launched in the biodiversity-rich Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary in Pune, supported by Microsoft under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. Titled “Biodiversity and Eco-Protection in Plus Valley, Tamhini,” the project will be implemented by the Forest Department in partnership with the Centre for Youth Development and Activities (CYDA).
The first phase of the initiative will focus on the Plus Valley region of the sanctuary, with the goal of promoting forest conservation and eco-tourism through active public participation. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was recently signed between Deputy Conservator of Forests, Pune Wildlife Division, Tushar Chavan, and CYDA Executive Director Pravin Jadhav. Representatives from Microsoft, CYDA, and forest officials were present at the signing.
As part of the project, several eco-friendly infrastructure developments are planned to help preserve the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity. These include solar-powered lighting, environmentally sensitive tourist amenities, protective entry gates, and clearly communicated environmental guidelines. Waste management will be strengthened with the installation of garbage bins and plastic bottle crushers.
To further support both tourism and wildlife, additional facilities such as drinking water stations and public toilets will be introduced. Plans also include the construction and restoration of small water bodies, dams, and gabion structures to enhance water storage and habitat conditions.
Deputy Conservator Tushar Chavan emphasized the project’s dual focus on conservation and community involvement. “Our objective is to protect Tamhini’s rich biodiversity through conservation efforts that engage and benefit the local public,” he said.
Pravin Jadhav, Executive Director of CYDA, remarked, “This partnership not only targets ecological restoration but also builds awareness and engagement with local stakeholders and visitors.”
Srichandana Nagoji, Community Affairs Lead – India & KUL, Microsoft, added, “At Microsoft, we are committed to supporting projects that address global challenges like climate change and biodiversity conservation through localized, community-driven efforts.”
Situated in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tamhini Wildlife Sanctuary is renowned for its dense forests, scenic waterfalls, and rare flora and fauna. This initiative represents a significant step toward balancing ecological protection with responsible and inclusive tourism in the region.
