Pune, 21st December 2022: The forest department set a trap and succeeded in capturing a leopard that had been injured in a vehicle accident near Chakan at Nanekarwadi after receiving information about the incident.

Yogesh Mahajan, a Forest Range Officer, got information that a leopard was sitting in the middle of the road in Nanekarwadi Fata, a densely populated area near the Pune-Nashik highway.

The leopard, injured in a collision with an unidentified vehicle on the Pune-Nashik highway, was sitting in a cage between two six-room chawl. The leopard attacked a woman when she stepped out of her house. However, the woman yelled and managed to escape the leopard’s grasp. The woman has minor injuries.

The forest department set a trap at the location due to the small gap between the two chalis. To capture the leopard, the staff at the Leopard Prevention Center put their own lives at risk and launched an incredible rescue mission.

The leopard was caught with the assistance of the Chakan Forest Department Rescue Team, Nature Guard Organization, Friends of Nature Association, Senior Police Inspector Vaibhav Shingare of Chakan Police Station, and Police Inspector Anil Devde.

The members of the rescue team put their own lives in danger by shooting the leopard twice at the location where it was hiding. Everyone pounced on the leopard and captured him as soon as they were sure that the leopard had fallen unconscious. The area’s residents had gathered in large numbers as the leopard was being rescued.

“They said the leopard ended up in a crowded spot in the Nanekarwadi region after straying from the forest of the nearby Alandi forest division. The leopard was captured in an unconscious state, and was taken to the Junnar Leopard Sanctuary for immediate treatment,” said Yogesh Mahajan, Forest Officer, Chakan Forest, Parikshetra.
