Pune: Lohegaon Eatery’s Licence Suspended for Using Fat Spread Instead of Butter in Bun Maska
Pune, 20th July 2026: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the registration licence of a food establishment in Lohegaon after it was found using vegetable fat spread instead of butter while serving ‘Bun Maska’ without informing customers.
The action was taken against R.A.T. Enterprises during an inspection conducted by FDA officials. According to the department, the outlet was using Nutralite Professional Vegetable Fat Spread in place of butter while continuing to sell the product as ‘Bun Maska’, which the FDA said amounted to misleading consumers.
Following the inspection, the FDA suspended the establishment’s registration licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act. Officials stated that food businesses must accurately disclose the ingredients used in their products and ensure that consumers are not misled by product names or descriptions.
FDA Joint Commissioner (Food) Digambar Bhogawade said food establishments must strictly adhere to food safety regulations and maintain transparency in the preparation and sale of food items. He also warned that the department would continue taking action against businesses found substituting ingredients, including the use of vegetable fat spread instead of butter or analogue paneer instead of paneer, without clearly informing customers.
The FDA has appealed to consumers to report food safety violations and misleading practices through its grievance redressal portal, adding that public participation plays a key role in strengthening food safety enforcement across Maharashtra.
