Pune: Man Accused of Murdering His Wife Drinks Poison in Police Station During Interrogation, Dies

Pimpri Chinchwad, 19th April 2025: In Pimpri Chinchwad, a shocking incident occurred in which a man, who was being interrogated by the police, died by suicide by drinking poisonous floor cleaner liquid inside the police station itself. The shocking part is that he was being interrogated for the death of his wife, for which he was accused. At the police station, he went to the toilet, consumed the poisonous liquid, and died. Investigations revealed that he had murdered his wife by choking her in front of their 6-year-old daughter.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Dr. Shivaji Pawar, the deceased man has been identified as Sharad Rupchand Chitale, age 35, resident of Talawade. His wife, Kanchan Chitale, age 26, was found unconscious on the bed on April 13th in Mauli Housing Society, Talawade. She was taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pimpri, where she was declared dead. Her postmortem was conducted, DCP Pawar said.

DCP Pawar further explained that Sharad Chitale, after murdering his wife, had been admitted to a private hospital in Nigdi following a suicide attempt by hanging. After his recovery, he was discharged yesterday. On the same day, Kanchan’s postmortem report arrived, confirming that she had died due to strangulation.

The Chikhali Police, who were investigating the case, called Sharad and his relatives for questioning and interrogation. During the interrogation, he told the police he needed to go to the toilet and went inside, closing the door from within. When the police broke the door open, they found that he had consumed the toilet cleaning liquid. He was taken to YCM Hospital but died early this morning at 3 AM while undergoing treatment, DCP Pawar said.

During the interrogation, Sharad Chitale confessed to murdering his wife due to suspicions of her extramarital affair. A day before the murder, they had a big fight at night, which their 6-year-old daughter witnessed. The girl went to sleep but woke up to see her father murdering her mother. She started shouting and ran out of the house. A neighbour saw her and asked what was happening. The girl told her everything. The woman accompanied the girl back to their house and found Kanchan unconscious on the bed and Sharad hanging himself. She called the police, and the investigation unfolded from there.
