Pune: Man Arrested For Keeping 126 Lovebirds, Three Mountain Parrots In A Cage

Pune, 18th May 2022: A man has been arrested for allegedly brutally trapping mountain parrots and lovebirds on the roof of a building. The birds were rescued by a team from the Forest Department and the Crime Branch of the Pune police. The operation was carried out in the Rasta Peth area.

The arrested person has been identified as Rahmatullah Shaukatullah Khan (57), a resident of Rasta Peth. A case has been registered against Khan under the Wildlife Protection Act based on a complaint from forest ranger Kaluram Kad at Samarth police station.

Acting on a tip-off about cruelty to the birds, a team of the forest department and Crime Branch Unit One rescued the birds.

Additional Commissioner of Police Ramnath Pokale said that the rescued parrots and lovebirds have been kept at the RESQ treatment transit centre (TTC) in Bavdhan. “We are investigating from where the birds were brought by the accused and to whom he was to give them”, he added.

The action was taken under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Srinivas Ghadge, ACP Gajanan Tompe, Inspector Sandeep Bhosale, Sub-Inspectors Sanjay Gaikwad, Sunil Kulkarni and police personnel Ajay Thorat, Amol Pawar, Ajay Jadhav, Tushar Malwadkar and Mahesh Bamgude.
