Pune: Man Attacked With Koyta In Kothrud; Residents Left in Shock

Kothrud, 31st January 2025: A brutal attack in Kothrud’s Sagar Colony Vegetable Market has sent shockwaves through the area, leaving residents fearful. Around 5:15 pm, a group of three to five youths assaulted a man with sharp weapons, including a koyta (machete), chasing him through the busy streets before inflicting serious injuries.
Sagar Colony, located on DP Road, is a bustling marketplace where people gather in the evenings to buy and sell vegetables. The attack unfolded amidst heavy traffic and crowds, leaving bystanders in a state of panic. An eyewitness recounted that the victim, who was standing near a kachchi dabeli food cart, was suddenly ambushed by the armed group, who shouted and struck him repeatedly as he tried to escape.
The shocking incident left hundreds of onlookers frozen in fear. A vegetable vendor reportedly felt dizzy from the shock, while the kachchi dabeli stall owner and nearby shopkeepers fled in terror. Some managed to call the police, but by the time officers arrived, the attackers had already escaped.
Senior Police Inspector Sandeep Deshmane of Kothrud Police Station clarified that the incident was not a gang war and confirmed that the police have detained the suspects. “The investigation is ongoing, and one person has been seriously injured,” he stated.
The attack has sparked serious concerns about safety in Kothrud. Residents are questioning how such violence can occur despite the police station being nearby. The increasing involvement of minor youths in violent crimes is also a growing issue. The lack of intervention from bystanders and the delayed police response have only intensified fears, leaving locals wondering—Is Kothrud really safe?
