Pune, 29th October 2025: The Bund Garden Police have registered a case against a man accused of defrauding parents of ₹21 lakh by falsely promising to secure admission for their children in engineering colleges. Preliminary investigations suggest the accused may have cheated at least seven to eight parents using the same method.

According to police, the accused, a resident of a housing society near Pune Station, was booked following a complaint filed by a woman from Keshavnagar, Chinchwad. In May, the accused allegedly contacted her over the phone, claiming he could help secure admission for her son in a reputed engineering college.

He later met the woman near Parmar Building, Pune Station, where he collected money from her under the false pretext of facilitating admission. However, when her son did not get admission to any college, the accused began avoiding her calls and making excuses. Realizing she had been duped, the woman approached Bund Garden Police Station and lodged a complaint.

Police Sub-Inspector Dhiraj Gupta, who is investigating the case, said that several other parents appear to have been defrauded by the same individual. “The total amount involved is estimated at around ₹21 lakh, and further investigation is underway to identify additional victims,” he said.

Frauds involving promises of securing admission to prestigious engineering and medical colleges have been reported in Pune in the past as well. Police said such scams often target parents of students who have scored below expected marks in entrance exams. Fraudsters typically obtain students’ personal information and exam results through coaching networks or online databases and use it to lure victims.
