Pune Man Falls Victim to Cyber Fraud, Loses Over 31 Lakh Rupees in Extortion Scheme
Pune, 23rd April 2024: A 41-year-old man from Bibwewadi has lodged a complaint at Bharti Vidyapeeth Police Station regarding a cyber fraud incident. The complaint states that between April 10 and 17, cyber criminals contacted the complainant via mobile phone. They falsely claimed that a parcel he had sent from Mumbai to Bangkok-Thailand contained narcotics, and that a case had been registered against him at the Mumbai Police’s Anti Narcotics Cell, leading to impending accusations.
Terrified by this false information, the victim, driven by fear, cooperated with the fraudsters who posed as law enforcement officials. Under the guise of conducting further investigations, the cyber criminals managed to extort a sum of 31 lakh 89 thousand rupees from him, promising to provide surveillance account details. The police have initiated legal proceedings against the cyber thieves.
