Pune University to Reimburse Educational Fees for Transgender Students Enrolling in Affiliated Colleges
Pune, 23rd April 2024: Transgender students enrolling in colleges and recognized higher education institutions affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) for the academic year 2024-25 will have their educational fees reimbursed from university funds. This decision is expected to boost transgender student enrollment rates.
All educational fees for courses under the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education of Maharashtra will be waived. This initiative stems from a government decision announced by the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education in December 2023. The Authorities of the SPPU have resolved to waive tuition fees for transgender students enrolled in all courses under the purview of the Ministry of Higher and Technical Education starting from the academic year 2024-25. As a result, educational fees for transgender students admitted to colleges and recognized educational institutions affiliated with the SPPU for the upcoming academic year will be covered by the university fund.
Dr. Munjaji Rasve, Deputy Chancellor of the SPPU’s Academic Admissions Department, issued the Circular today. Additionally, Principals, Directors, and Heads of Departments of Colleges and Higher Education Institutions affiliated with the SPPU have been directed to execute this decision.
Social activist Chandni Gore commented that while this decision is appreciated, SPPU has taken it rather belatedly. She noted that during her education, assistance was not readily available despite requests.
