Pune, 3rd December 2024: In a shocking revelation, students have alleged that a college affiliated with Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU)—an institution established to promote the Marathi language—is not allowing them to opt for Marathi as a subject.

The controversy centers around Kasturi Shikshan Sanstha in Shikrapur, where students claim Marathi is being disrespected and discouraged. A video related to the issue has surfaced on social media, drawing widespread criticism and calls for action.

Following student complaints, the university administration set up an inquiry committee to investigate the matter. The committee has submitted its report, and it will be placed before the Board of Trustees for review. The university has assured that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the University Act.

Senate Committee member Dadabhau Shinkar brought the issue to the forefront, submitting an adjournment proposal demanding serious action against the college. “Many affiliated colleges do not have full-time principals or professors, which creates significant difficulties for students. The affiliation of such colleges should be revoked,” Shinkar stated.

Joint Secretary of Yuva Sena, Kalpesh Yadav, echoed the demand for strict measures. “Not allowing students to study Marathi is a grave matter. If the college’s affiliation is not canceled, we will organize protests,” Yadav warned.

Responding to the controversy, SPPU Vice-Chancellor Dr. Suresh Gosavi said, “The university has received a complaint regarding the matter. A committee was formed to investigate, and its report has been submitted. It will be reviewed by the Board of Trustees, and necessary action will be taken.”

The incident has reignited concerns about the functioning of some of SPPU’s affiliated colleges, with many calling for stricter oversight to ensure the promotion and respect of regional languages like Marathi.
