Viman Nagar, 14th February 2023: The Pune police have invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against a gang that had been harassing traders at Phoenix Mall in Viman Nagar. The gang members were demanding money to allow the unloading of goods trucks, and an FIR had earlier been registered against them at the Vimantal police station for extortion. The accused have been identified as gang leader Ravindra Jayaprakash Sasane (49) of Khulewadi in Vimannagar, and his associates Mangal Ramesh Satpute (40) of Dhanori, and Deepak Sampat Gaikwad (40) of Khadki in Yerwada.

According to the police, the accused had formed an organized gang to extort money from traders. Even after preventive actions were taken against them, the gang members did not mend their ways. Therefore, they have been charged under the MCOCA, which will make their bail difficult for at least six months.

The MCOCA is a law that enables the authorities to crack down on organized crime syndicates and provides for stringent punishment for those involved in such crimes. The action against the Mathadi gang was taken under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (East Region) Ranjan Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 4) Shashikant Borate, and ACP Kishore Jadhav. The team included Senior Police Inspector Vilas Sonde, Police Inspector (Crime) Mangesh Jagtap, PSI SS Kollure, and Umesh Dhende, Sachin Jadhav, Chandan Todekar, Vaghule, and Bhor.

Since taking over the charge of Pune City Police, Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr has launched a crackdown on criminal elements. This is the 13th MCOCA action taken under his tenure.
