Pimpri, 8th June 2025: A curious and chaotic scene unfolded on Friday night in Pimpri’s Premlok Park area, where water was seen gushing from the trunk of a gulmohar tree, prompting hundreds of residents to gather in awe. What many initially believed to be a divine miracle turned out to be a case of a leaking underground water pipeline.

The incident occurred between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. near the main road outside Sahara Society. Videos of the spectacle quickly went viral on social media, showing locals—some in devotional reverence—offering turmeric, vermillion, and garlands to the tree. Children splashed in the water while elders whispered theories about a holy sign.

However, clarity arrived when officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) intervened. Deputy Engineer Pravin Dhumal from the B Regional Office visited the spot and confirmed that the phenomenon was purely technical. “It’s not a miracle. An old water pipeline runs beneath the tree. Due to a leak, water found an outlet through the hollow trunk,” he explained.

PCMC immediately shut off the water supply and began repair work. Officials decided against removing the tree, fearing further complications. “We are proceeding cautiously to ensure the tree isn’t damaged and the leak is properly fixed,” Dhumal added.

Residents who initially treated the tree as a spiritual site came to accept the municipal explanation. “We were amazed when we saw water flowing from a tree. It felt like something divine, but once the engineers explained the reason, it made perfect sense,” said a local resident.

Milind Deshmukh of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti told Punekar News, “Here, people will believe anything; they think everything is a miracle. They don’t look for the source. Our people lack the ability to think rationally. The incident in Premlok Park is an example of that. Some individuals are also mischievous and take advantage of others’ innocence. People should be taught a scientific point of view in school, not just the science subject.”

The incident, while handled swiftly, has once again highlighted the challenges of aging urban infrastructure in rapidly growing cities like Pimpri-Chinchwad. Experts note that without regular inspections and maintenance, such leaks can cause not just confusion but potential hazards.

In this case, the mystery of the “miracle tree” was solved before any serious damage occurred, thanks to timely action by the civic authorities.
