Pune, 15th July 2023: The monsoon winds in Pune have gained strength over the past two days, signaling an increase in rainfall for the state of Maharashtra. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed this change to the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal. As a result, meteorologists predict a significant surge in rainfall throughout the state from July 19 to 22.

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon winds have intensified, causing moisture-laden clouds to traverse the Western Ghats. Simultaneously, the formation of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal will contribute to widespread rainfall during the specified period. Coastal areas may experience heavy downpours, while regions such as Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha can also anticipate substantial rainfall.

To alert residents and authorities, the Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Ratnagiri and Raigad districts on July 17, followed by Ratnagiri, Raigad, and Pune districts on July 18. These alerts indicate the possibility of heavy rainfall in most areas, with certain locations likely to face more intense precipitation, particularly in the hilly regions.

As the monsoon progresses, Mumbai and other coastal regions have already witnessed heavy rains. In a span of nine hours, from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, rainfall measurements reached 38 mm in Colaba, 30 mm in Santa Cruz, 28 mm in Amravati, 17 mm in Nagpur and Ratnagiri, 14 mm in Mahabaleshwar, and 14 mm in Alibag. Additionally, other areas including Chandrapur, Wardha, Nashik, Nanded, and Solapur experienced varying amounts of rainfall ranging from 2 to 7 mm.
