Pune Monsoon Update: Light To Moderate Rainfall Forecasted For Coming Week

Pune, 1st July 2023: In a significant weather development, light to moderate rainfall with fairly widespread to widespread coverage is expected over Konkan & Goa and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra over the next five days, informed Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting at IMD Pune.

The region may also experience isolated instances of heavy to very heavy rainfall, posing potential risks and challenges to the affected areas.

The primary weather system responsible for these anticipated conditions is an off-shore trough, known as “taat duravarti resha,” which is located over the Arabian Sea at mean sea level. This trough extends from the coast of Maharashtra to the coast of Kerala. The presence of strong westerly winds in the area has facilitated the transport of abundant moisture from the Arabian Sea, leading to the formation of the predicted rainfall.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal. While its initial movement is expected to impact monsoon rain over the southern peninsula, its trajectory suggests that it will subsequently affect the southern parts of Maharashtra in the coming days. This development adds to the overall weather complexity and raises concerns about potential disruptions in these regions.

For the city of Pune and its surrounding areas, the forecast indicates generally cloudy conditions with occasional overcast skies. Light rain is expected to persist for the next six to seven days, with precipitation levels ranging from 2.5 to 15.5 mm within a 24-hour period. However, it is worth noting that a yellow alert/warning has been issued only for isolated areas of the ghat region, highlighting the localized nature of the potential impacts, Kashyapi added.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents in the affected areas to stay informed about the evolving weather conditions. Precautionary measures, such as being cautious while traveling, staying away from flood-prone areas, and following official guidance, should be observed to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.

As the situation unfolds, the local authorities, along with meteorological agencies, will continue to provide updates and advisories to keep the public informed and prepared for any potential emergencies arising from the anticipated heavy rainfall in Konkan & Goa and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra.
