Pune/Mumbai, 14th June 2023: In a distressing incident on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway near Lonavala yesterday, a tanker carrying ethanol from a sugar mill in Satara overturned and caught fire, claiming the lives of four individuals, including three members of a family.

The police investigation reveals that the driver lost control of the speeding vehicle, causing it to hit a sidewall and spill the ethanol. The accident occurred around 11.30 am, with the subsequent fire erupting shortly after.

The Pune Rural police have taken legal action against the driver, Nitin Satre, and the unidentified owner of the tanker. They have been charged with culpable homicide under Section 304 (2) of the Indian Penal Code. This section pertains to acts that lead to death, done with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death but without the intention to cause it. However, no arrests have been made yet, as the driver is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Initial assumptions about the substance being oil or methanol were proven incorrect. The police have now confirmed that the tanker was transporting ethanol from the Jarandeshwar Sugar mill in Satara to fuel depots in Vashi for blending with automobile fuels.

While the investigation progresses, the authorities are awaiting further results before invoking provisions related to negligent handling of substances.
